The City of Goodyear is planning to hold a free 30-minute swim lesson for kids dubbed as "The World's Largest Swimming Lesson" event.

On June 21, the city will host kids over the age of 2 for a swim lesson at the Goodyear Community Pool. Participants will earn a certificate of completion and a "Swimming Lessons Save Lives" wristband.

The city will also have drowning prevention, water safety tips and swim lesson educational materials for parents. There will also be free popcorn and shaved ice treats to enjoy, and the pool will be available afterward for an open swim.

The event, which was created by the World Waterpark Association eight years ago, is held at aquatic facilities throughout the state and designed to prevent child drownings. According to the state's Drowning Prevention Coalition, drowning is especially high for children 1 through 5 and is a top cause of injury-related deaths for children in the state.

The event will begin at 2 p.m. at the Community Pool on Loma Linda Boulevard. Residents can visit the city's website or call 623-882-7525 for additional information.
