Gov. Doug Ducey has laid out a plan to use part of the $57 million in settlement funds the state will receive from Volkswagen for new school buses, wild land fire crews, and equipment for the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Ducey recently released his plan to use $38 million of the settlement funds from a 2016 lawsuit involving Volkswagen's violation of the Clean Air Act to purchase 280 new school buses for low income communities throughout Arizona.

“K-12 education remains our top priority,” Ducey said in a statement. “These dollars will go a long way towards making sure Arizona students are safely delivered to school everyday. Additionally, putting these dollars toward the purchase of new school buses will free up existing funding sources, allowing school districts to focus on other capital needs to benefit students."

According to the governor's office, the funds would be allocated to districts where 60 percent or more of their students are eligible for free or reduced lunch and at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind.
