OVERLAND PARK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: 2020 Census is coming, and everyone counts!

Overland Park Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Aug. 29.

In 2020, our nation will conduct the once-a-decade census, with the goal of counting every person in the United States once, only once and in the right place. Everyone matters, so it’s important you respond. Responding to the census helps your community get its fair share of funding and representation.

The census count determines the number of seats Kansas has in the House of Representatives, as well as where local legislative, voting precinct, and school districts are drawn. Additionally, census data determine how over $675 billion in annual federal funding is allocated among states and communities to support local infrastructure and social programs, like road improvement, hospitals, schools, head start programs, senior services, and more. According to a study by the George Washington Institute, this funding represents over $60,000 for a Kansas household of four over the next decade, and about 25% of the state’s total annual budget. Census records additionally provide a link to our past, while our responses will help future generations understand their roots.

Are you or a family member looking to get personally involved, while working flexible hours and earning competitive pay? Census Takers in Johnson County make $17.00 per hour, have paid training, work flexible hours, and are reimbursed for mileage at $0.58/mile. Most jobs are part time, although supervisors and office staff will have various hours and pay rates. Census-taking work is roughly expected to take 4-8 weeks in spring and early summer 2020. Interested candidates are urged to apply now, but the bulk of offers will be made in January 2020 for jobs starting around April 2020. There may be other jobs before that time based on the needs of the agency, so the sooner applicants get in the system, the more opportunities to be hired.
