Leawood Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Sept. 9.

The Art in Public Places Initiative of the Leawood Arts Council is pleased to announce the temporary installation of a kinetic sculpture by John King.

Sky Writing I is the tenth temporary installation of the “Art on Loan Program”, which provides local artists the opportunity to display their work to the residents of Leawood for one year. Sky Writing was imagined while riding the thermal currents in a hang glider. King’s sense of whimsy is evident in his designs.

The kinetic art piece is made of painted steel, standing 14’ high X 14’ long X 14’ wide. The piece is painted a shimmering iridescent blue, reflecting the sky as it moves with the wind. Sky Writing I has wing-like elements, hinged in four places that move the piece horizontally.

The artwork will be located on the lawn on the southwest corner of the Leawood City Hall property.

Inspired by Alexander Calder, John King was drawn to create art when he learned that art could be about the delight of motion. An alumnus of Beloit College, he works from his home in Lyons, Colorado.

The Art in Public Places Initiative of the Leawood Arts Council will host a reception for the artist on Thursday, October 3rd at the installation site. In the event of rain, the reception will be held in the Main Conference Room of Leawood City Hall. Please join us for refreshments from 11:30 to 1:00 pm. Meet the artist and view the sculpture.
