Washington, DC (April 25, 2024) – Raising speed limits on highways could lead to more crashes on nearby roads, according to new research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Dr. David Yang, president and executive director of the AAA Foundation, emphasized this point by stating, “Increasing posted speed limits on freeways may improve traffic flow but could also lead to safety concerns in adjacent communities once speeding drivers proceed to neighboring roadways.”

The study conducted by AAA Foundation researchers focused on the impact of speed limit changes on interstate highways in Georgia, Michigan, and Oregon. The research revealed a concerning trend of increased speed-related crashes on local streets within a 1-mile radius of the interstates following the speed limit adjustments. Jake Nelson, AAA’s director of traffic safety advocacy, highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, “This research has uncovered an unintended but potentially lethal consequence of raising highway speed limits.”

The AAA Foundation recommends a multi-pronged approach to address speeding behavior and ensure road safety for all communities. By advocating for the implementation of the Safe System Approach (SSA), transportation officials can leverage engineering and behavioral countermeasures to prevent traffic crashes and injuries. The Foundation's guide for implementing the SSA serves as a valuable resource for communities looking to enhance road safety measures.

With speeding contributing to almost one-third of road fatalities in the past two decades, the importance of addressing this issue is paramount. Jake Nelson urged road authorities to utilize the research findings as a tool to identify life-saving solutions and prioritize the safety of all road users.

The AAA Foundation, established in 1947, continues to play a crucial role in preventing traffic deaths and injuries through research and educational initiatives. By researching the causes of crashes and educating the public on strategies to prevent and reduce injuries, the Foundation aims to create safer road networks for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other road users.

AAA, founded in 1902, has evolved into one of North America's largest membership organizations, serving over 64 million members across the continent. Offering a range of services including roadside assistance, travel, discounts, and financial and insurance services, AAA remains committed to advocating for safe mobility and enhancing the journey of its members.
